x11vnc and remote desktop access

I just stumbled over x11vnc:

"x11vnc allows one to view remotely and interact with real X displays..."
    http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/

I've always wanted a simple way to access a remote linux desktop (gnome), without the bloat of a VNC server. Like XDMCP tunneled under ssh, which I never figured out how to do. So, x11vnc looks like a reasonable solution. Anyone have opinions on x11vnc or similar options?
